Relentless downpours swept through central South Korea from Wednesday to Thursday, submerging roads, flooding villages and leaving behind widespread damage in what authorities describe as one of the most intense monsoon events of the summer.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, at least four people have been confirmed dead, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.

Authorities remain on high alert, with the Korea Meteorological Administration warning that up to 300 millimeters of additional rain could fall in central and southern regions through Saturday.

The following images reveal the path of destruction left by the monsoon, as torrential rains inundate villages and overwhelm communities.
